Dear Annie: I will be 40 this year and really want to celebrate this milestone in my life. In the past, my husband has told me he needs plenty of notice to plan something special for my birthday, but we've never done much. I don't require a lot to be happy, but this time I wanted to go all out.
Six months before my birthday, I asked him to plan a party for me. He said he thought it was a great idea and would take care of it.

Come on. The man doesn't seem to initiate anything. It's great to be surprised, but lady, if you want a party, throw it yourself. Who cares? You can celebrate with your daughters, husband, and all those friends who will come. Everyone will come. Have fun!!
If he is planning to surprise her, I hope it makes up for the agony she is putting herself through.

Oh, for gosh sakes! Plan your own party. For my 40th, we had a cake (that I ordered) in a restaurant (that I picked out) and invited friends and family. We had a great time and it didn't matter that I did most of the planning.

Annie, I think you were off the mark on this one! The wife said that their daughters were more than ready to help him- but he never got the ball rolling. Yes, maybe the daughters could have nudged him along more- but this really shows how the husband feels about her. She's right, and she sees "the writing in the wall"- why do you think we have that saying? She needs to sit him down and tell him they are going to a marriage councilor or she's outta there! She deserves better, and she's not too young to start looking!
