Annie's Mailbox®, June 8

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar

Dear Annie: My 55-year-old brother, "Cary," has been in and out of jail for the last couple of years. He has had problems with drugs and alcohol, and can't keep a job, so he has trouble paying child support.

My mother, who passed away last year, always helped him out. She thought by loving him, he would come around. When she died, there was a small life insurance policy that gave each of her children $5,000. Cary's money was put into a trust, and my niece and I control it.

Confused in Kansas who doesn't look at other men - the only problem i see with you looking away or looking down is, you may be endangering yourself by not being fully aware of your surroundings, especially if you are doing this when your husband is not around. I would think this might make you a prime target for crime. On the other hand, you may also be missing out on life by always looking down. Who knows what you have already missed because you were looking the other way. I imagine it must be very stressful trying to avoiding all the men you have encountered over the years. Human interaction is a normal, every-day act of living. Good luck with that.

The brother in jail ... at least in jail the twenty here and there is more likely to go towards actual necessities. The money spent before was wasted.

Confused--you don't have to ogle or stare at other men, but to constantly look away and not acknowledge another person's presence is rude. Every man out there is not interested in you, and you can speak to another man without falling into bed with him.
