Ethnically Speaking, April 12

by Larry Meeks

Dear Larry: I heard Barack Obama's speech regarding race relations in America, and I still am puzzled.

I do not understand how he can have hatred or latent hatred for a country that has been so good to him and his family. I could understand if a person who is poor and struggling to make ends meet thought that way, though I wouldn't agree with that person. I can't believe either of you really listened to Barak's speech. Just to make sure, I listened to it again and you know what? Never once did Barak say that he hated this country. Once he called America "the country I love" and twice he talked of his faith in the American people and his belief in their generosity. He spoke at lenth about how our country is great because of our ability to change and to work against injustices that occur. I am so disappointed with your answer to this person, Larry. I haven't always agreed with your stand on certain issues, but I have listened to your point of view and tried to understand it. Did you actually hear the entire speech? What exactly did Obama say that led you to believe he has a hatred for America? Please don't tell me that you were just answering a gerneral question about how a person of mixed race can feel confused and angry. If that were true you should not have used Obama as a specific example and you should have corrected the writer's misconceptions about his speech. I am left to think that you, too, have a political agenda that you are promoting by including this letter and answer in your column.
