Q. My grandson is 6 years old. He lives with his mother and stepfather. He lived with me from the time he was 18 months until he was 4 years old.

For the teen & grades. He should also be asked to form some goals. Without any goals, he's unlikely to find any reason to try any harder. Certain colleges may not be his only goal. You may find another that has some influence. If he doesn't have any future goals, that could be part of the problem. It's hard to be motivated without any goals.

Regarding the second letter, I was that teenager. The reason behind his lack of effort could easily be that he's so bored in class that he just doesn't see the point. I routinely pulled As and Bs in the subjects I was interested in, but it wasn't through any effort on my part. I was so far ahead of the rest of the class that I went to class only to get and hand in assignments.
I suspect that the kid in the letter is similar. He's bored, so school holds no charms.
