The Sense of Loss

In the outpouring of tributes and anecdotes about the passing of Tim Russert, one item caught my eye. It was a note that recalled that this was the second tragedy in a matter of months for the Russert family: It was less than three months ago that Tim's sister Betty lost her husband, William Buckenroth; he was 61. Meanwhile, their father, Tim Russert senior or "Big Russ," continues to live in Buffalo.

Tim Russert was one of only a very few people in television news who I trusted to give me the truth, the whole truth, and the facts, all the pertinent facts, without bias. He was an honest newsman and I trusted him and I respected him, and I held him in high regard. Tim Russert respected his viewers and held us in high regard. With most television news people I am certain that they only tell me what they want me to know. Even when a transcript of their reporting would appear unbiased, they communicate their bias with tone and body language and by what they leave out. They almost always get the facts wrong early in a story. They think they are smarter and wiser than their typical viewer. Tim Russert was a top notch newsman in his own right, but he seemed even better when compared to his peers.
