Lynda Hirsch on Soaps -- Q&A

Q: I am so excited. I am off work for Labor Day and cannot wait to see my soaps. Any suggestions on which to watch? I love them all and I don't have TiVo. — Becca, Toledo, Ohio

A: Hope you have a picnic to go to or a good book to read. All of CBS's daytime schedule is preempted for the U.S. Tennis Open. ABC has decided to rerun "classic episodes." Culturally, some of those might be a good idea, especially as you are without the wonderful world of TiVo.

For example, "All My Children" plans to re-show one of their best episode in recent days: Angie and Jesse's wedding. Here is what happens — but you really do have to watch it for the special effects and the superb acting:

Jesse engages Robert in a life-or-death battle as Angie struggles to keep the helicopter from crashing. Jake and Frankie work valiantly to stop Tad from bleeding to death. Jesse manages to pull Robert out of the helicopter and rescue Angie. Frankie restrains Robert, who tries to taunt Jesse into killing him. Frankie stops Jesse from shooting Robert, pointing out Jesse would be playing into Robert's hands. The police take a cuffed Robert away as Frankie airlifts a critically injured Tad to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Aidan and Greg try to keep everyone calm in the ballroom. Krystal stays by Julia's side at the hospital. Julia refuses surgery, as she knows her situation is hopeless. Dixie assures a dying Julia that Kathy will always be loved. Colby and Adam look after Kathy at the mansion and do their best to ease her fears. Kendall tells Ryan that Greenlee found out she and Aidan slept together and asks for his help. Zach finds Greenlee purging her place of all things connected to Aidan. Zach calmly helps a distressed Greenlee remove her engagement ring as she rants against Aidan and Kendall. Greenlee impulsively kisses Zach.

"One Life to Live" will show Viki's trip to heaven. It was a very heartwarming episode with Ben urging her to move on with her life. "General Hospital" has the "Lulu kills Logan" episode. As for "Days of Our Lives," it is being preempted. So for Labor Day, ABC is your best bet, especially AMC and OLTL. Now, get everyone of your friends to "loan" you a dollar and get yourself a TiVo.
