Lynda Hirsch on Soaps -- Q&A

Q: I was hoping that "One Life to Live's" Tina would be staying on the show. Now I hear she is going. Why? — Margo, Little Rock, Ark.

A: Andrea Evans (Tina) still lives in L.A. and had no plans to move to New York, where OLTL is taped. "ABC and 'One Life to Live' were thrilled to have Andrea Evans reprise the role of Tina Lord after 18 years," said executive producer Frank Valentini. "Her return was made possible with the understanding that it would be short term as Ms. Evans' life, family and home are on the west coast. OLTL did not ask that she move across the country in order for her to return to the show. The character of Tina is a very important part of the OLTL canvas and when there is an opportunity to have her (Tina and Andrea) return at a future date, the show would be happy to explore it."

Evans noted, "I had a fabulous time bringing Tina back to the show and certainly hope that the chance to take on the role … manifests itself again."

Q: This "Kay is dead but really isn't" plot on "Young and Restless" seems very familiar. Is this a case of deja vu, or has it happened before? — Brenda, Sarasota, Fla.

A: Not only did it happen before, but the circumstances were very similar.
Last time, Kay was in love with a hairdresser named Derek Thurston. The May-December romance was going well. Kay loved him; he loved her money. Then his ex-wife, Suzanne, came to town. Suzanne gave Kay candy laced with drugs. Kay's reaction was so violent she was sent to a sanitarium. At the sanitarium Kay's roommate ate some of the candy. The drugs drove the roommate over the edge, setting the room on fire. Kay escaped, but the roommate's body was identified as Kay, as she was wearing a ring Kay had given her. In a Huckleberry Finn moment Kay even attend her own funeral. Kay began haunting Suzanne, who was so terrified by the ghostly visits that she was driven insane.

Q: I thought the scenes of Paris on "Young and Restless" were very realistic. How did they do such a great job? — Felipe, Arlington, Texas

A: They went there. There was a time when soaps always went on location. With budget cuts, few shows do that anymore. Y&R decided to go to France, where the show is a big ratings grabber. Eric Braeden (Victor Newman), Sharon Case (Sharon Newman), Joshua Morrow (Nicholas Newman) and Eileen Davidson (Ashley Abbott) were sent. As for how the stars enjoyed Paris, as usual with location shoots, for the most part they saw the streets they were shooting on for those 12-hour days.
