Big City States: Typically, a country's capital is also its largest, most important city. The most populous country where that is the case, however, is actually Indonesia. China's largest city is Shanghai; India's is Mumbai and the largest American city is New York. Then comes Indonesia (and Jakarta). Ohio, incidentally, is the most populous U.S. state whose capital is also the largest city, this being Columbus.
