In 1992, Deb Price of The Detroit News started writing the first nationally syndicated column on gay and lesbian issues in mainstream newspapers.

With her spouse, journalist Joyce Murdoch, she has authored two award-winning books: And Say Hi to Joyce: America's First Gay Column Comes Out and Courting Justice: Gay Men and Lesbians v. the Supreme Court. Courting Justice, a behind-the-scenes look at the 50-year
history of how the nation's highest court has dealt with gay rights, was named one of The Washington Post's "Raves and Faves" of 2001.

The many scoops of Deb's award-winning column include revealing that 1996 Republican presidential nominee Robert Dole accepted and then returned a $1,000 contribution from the Log Cabin Republicans. In October 2001, Deb was the first to reveal that President Gerald Ford supports full federal benefits for gay couples. Ford's disclosure to Price made him the highest-level politician of either party to endorse extending Social Security, tax breaks and other benefits to gay couples, and led him to join the gay-friendly Republican Unity Coalition - a step noted on the front page of The Wall Street Journal.

Price, described by The Washington Post as "one of the most high-profile lesbians in the news business," offers readers a uniquely personal view of the unfolding gay rights movement. She shared with readers, for example, what it was like to be among the first gay couples to marry in Canada, and then recounted the adventure of being openly gay honeymooners in Hawaii.

Over the years, she has discovered that her column has the power to change lives, heal families and transform communities.
